Guwahati: The All Assam Government NPS Employees’ Association has strongly opposed the Centre’s plan to replace the National Pension Scheme (NPS) with the proposed Universal Pension Scheme (UPS) and demanded the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). At its third biennial conference held at Rupnagar in Guwahati, the association termed NPS an “anti-employee policy” and a “mockery in the name of pension.”

Association president Achyutananda Hazarika and general secretary Apurba Sharma announced that from next month, a massive democratic movement will be launched across Assam in support of the OPS demand.

Inaugurating the programme, Chandan Kakoti, president of the Assam Secretariat Service Association, assured full cooperation in the movement and appealed to other organizations to extend solidarity.

Professor Jagadish Chandra Goswami, addressing the gathering, criticized the government for denying OPS to employees while ministers and legislators continue to enjoy its benefits. Former Assam Administrative Tribunal chairman Rajiv Kumar Bora also said that if the finance department made proper calculations, restoring OPS would not be difficult.

Retired IPS officer Dilip Kumar Bora, speaking as a guest, alleged that there was a malicious attempt to portray government employees as corrupt and anti-people. He urged employees to counter this narrative by dedicating themselves to public service.

The conference also re-elected Hazarika and Sharma as president and general secretary for the next two years and resolved to form a welfare fund for the security and well-being of employees.
