Assam Cabinet Approves GoM Report on ST Status for Six Communities
Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet on wednessday approved the report of the Group of Ministers (GoM) on granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six major communities of the state. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma at Lok Sewa Bhawan, Dispur.
Six Communities Moved Closer to ST Status
With the Cabinet’s approval, the proposal to grant ST status to the following communities will now be placed before the Assam Legislative Assembly:
- Tai Ahom
- Chutia
- Moran
- Motok
- Koch-Rajbongshi
- Tea Tribes (Adivasis)
The three-member GoM was headed by Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, with Pijush Hazarika and Keshab Mahanta as the other members.
Once passed in the Assembly, the proposal will be forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, for final approval. This marks one of the strongest steps taken so far towards fulfilling a long-standing demand of these communities.
Three Bighas of Land Cleared for New State-of-the-Art Museum
The Cabinet approved the transfer of three bighas of land from the Handloom, Textiles and Sericulture Department at the Government Muga Farm in Reshom Nagar, Khanapara, to the Cultural Affairs Department.
A state-of-the-art museum will be built on this land with support from JSW I&P Holdings Pvt. Ltd.
The museum will highlight Assam’s rich textile heritage and will showcase the historic Vrindavani Vastra, which will be brought on loan from the British Museum, London.
New Service Rules for ASSTC Teachers Approved
The Cabinet also approved the Assam Survey and Settlement Training Centre Teachers’ Service Rules, 2025.These rules will guide recruitment, service conditions, and career growth for teachers at the Assam Survey & Settlement Training Centre (ASSTC) in Dakhingaon, Guwahati.
