Assam Bartajivi Sangha: Anjan Kumar Sharma elected GS, all office-bearers unopposed

Guwahati: All office-bearers of the Assam Bartajivi Sangha were elected unopposed for the 2026–27 term after the deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers ended. The final list of candidates was released by Chief Election Officer Biswajit Das and Election Officer Phanidhar Das.

Although many journalists from across Assam had initially filed nominations for the 21 organisational posts, several candidates later withdrew their papers. This led to the unopposed election of all office-bearers, reflecting unity and mutual understanding among the members of the organisation.

The election notification was issued on January 18, and February 14 was announced as the polling date.

For the next two years, Madhu Sudhan Medhi of Asamiya Khabor, North Guwahati, has been elected president. Bhaskar Sharma of Dainik Janambhumi and Jatin Bhagawati of Asomiya Pratidin have been elected vice-presidents. Anjan Kumar Sharma, senior sub editor of Asomiya Pratidin, has been elected general secretary. Akhil Kalita of Assam Talks, Udalguri, and Sonadhar Deka of Asamiya Khabor have been elected assistant general secretaries. Nabanita Kalita of Prag News has been elected treasurer.

Ashwini Kumar Duwara of Asomiya Pratidin, Dhemaji, and Prashanta Kumar Modak of Asomiya Pratidin, Lakhimpur, were elected organisational secretaries. Hemanta Barman of Niyamiya Barta has been elected publicity secretary, while Lakshminandan Kalita of NK TV, Mangaldai, has been elected magazine editor. Aditya Chandra Barman of Asomiya Pratidin has been elected office secretary.

The executive committee members elected unopposed include Manoj Kumar Gogoi (Amar Asom, Sivasagar), Dipak Sharma (Dainik Janambhumi, Biswanath), Tapanicharan Kalita (Asomiya Pratidin, Dimoria), Pradip Barman (DY 365), Sahed Ali Ahmed (Gana Adhikar, Barpeta), Bhaskarjyoti Medhi (Dainik Janambhumi, Nagaon), Kamal Talukdar (Dainandin Barta, Tinsukia), Dip Hazarika (DY 365) and Bharat Rajbongshi (Dainik Asom, Baghbar).

Meanwhile, at a meeting of the executive committee held on saturday night, Basal Chakraborty of News18 Hailakandi and Kishorjyoti Goswami of Dainik Janambhumi were nominated as assistant general secretary and organisational secretary respectively for the next two years. As per Clause 7(d) of the organisation’s constitution, the present general secretary, Mukutbaj Sharma, has been nominated as adviser to the new committee.
