Guwahati: A group of artists, writers, and citizens protested outside Rabindra Bhawan in Guwahati on Friday. They demanded that the Assam government reopen the venue within two months after proper renovation.

The protest was led by Sanskritik Aikyamancha, Assam. People from the cultural field said that Rabindra Bhawan is very important for Assam’s art and culture. “It is not just a building. It is a part of our identity,” said a theatre artist at the protest.

The government closed Rabindra Bhawan many months ago for repair. But artists said no clear work has started and there is no fixed date for reopening. This delay has upset many performers who depend on this venue for their shows.

The protesters asked the government to Start repair work immediately, Finish it within two months, Also fix other halls and libraries in districts, Keep venue rents low, so small-town artists can also perform

“Without these venues, our culture cannot grow. Artists need space to perform,” said one organiser.

They also gave a written request to the government. The artists said they want the government to work fast and allow shows to start again soon.
