National Science Day 2026 Celebrated at Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati

Guwahati : National Science Day 2026 was celebrated at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati on Thursday with a special programme. The day is observed every year to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by C. V. Raman.

This year’s theme was “Women in Science: Catalyzing Viksit Bharat.” The event highlighted the role of women in science and technology across different fields.

Dr. Brojeswari Das, Scientist D from the Central Silk Board, attended the programme as Chief Guest. She delivered a research-based lecture on sericulture and silk technology, with special focus on Assam’s Muga silk sector.

Dr. Dorodi Priyam Duarah, Subject Matter Specialist from Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kahikuchi, was the Guest Speaker. She presented data and statistics on the current participation of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields in India.

As part of the celebration, the staff of RMC Guwahati presented a video documentary paying tribute to leading women scientists of India, from space research to data science. The documentary also highlighted inspiring stories of women from the Northeast who have brought positive change in society through scientific thinking.

Deputy Director General of Meteorology Dr. Sanjay O’Neill Shaw and Scientist-F Sunit Das welcomed the guests and spoke about the achievements of women scientists during the 150-year history of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Dr. Gayatri Kalita, Scientist D, delivered the vote of thanks.

A key highlight of the programme was the participation of high school students from several local schools, including Shyam Bhumi High School. The students attended the lectures and also visited an open exhibition of meteorological instruments set up at the office premises, where they received practical knowledge about weather monitoring tools.

The programme aimed to inspire young minds and promote the contribution of women in science.
