Guwahati: On the occasion of the 57th birthday of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), along with its councillors and various organisations, will organise a three-day series of social welfare and public service programmes across the city.
The initiatives aim to promote cleanliness, environmental protection, social service and public welfare, while spreading a positive social message among citizens.
Announcing the programme, Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania said, “Cleanliness means trust, greenery means the future, and public welfare means responsibility. The convergence of these three builds a vibrant city.”
As per the schedule, on January 30, cleanliness drives will be carried out at statues of eminent personalities across Guwahati. In addition, cleanliness campaigns will be conducted at 120 religious institutions, with two institutions covered in each ward.
On January 31, GMC will organise cleanliness drives at 120 social institutions across all wards. Two special health check-up camps will also be held for sanitation workers.
On February 1, prayers will be offered at religious institutions in every ward for the long and healthy life of the Chief Minister. A ceremonial offering will also be made at each institution. Prayers will also be held seeking the formation of a BJP-NDA government in Assam under the leadership of Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.
On the same day, under the Chief Minister’s call for women empowerment, GMC will inaugurate ‘Udyamita Haat’ under the Women Entrepreneurship Scheme at the Zoo Road flyover area. Five self-help groups will be provided market stalls using scheme funds. The programme will be organised under the initiative “Self-Reliant Women, Self-Reliant Assam” with support from the Assam Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana.
As part of an environmental initiative titled ‘Green Guwahati Project’, around 1,000 neem saplings will be planted across 60 wards in the premises of religious and social institutions. Mayor Sarania said that institutions where the saplings grow successfully will receive financial assistance of ₹3 lakh each after six months.
Additionally, fruits will be distributed among patients in hospitals, inmates of orphanages and old age homes. In the evening at 5 pm, GMC will inaugurate around 400 mini high-mast lights at religious and social institutions under the ‘Banti Project’.
GMC stated that the three-day programme reflects its commitment towards building a cleaner, greener and more socially responsible Guwahati.
