Guwahati: Former General Secretary of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Sankor Jyoti Baruah, along with more than a hundred leaders and workers from various organisations, formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday.
The mass joining programme was held at the BJP Assam headquarters in Basistha, in the presence of senior party leaders.
Addressing the gathering, Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia said that with 14.50 crore primary members and over 12 lakh active members, the BJP has emerged as the largest political organisation in the world. He added that millions of BJP workers, inspired by the spirit of nationalism, are working tirelessly in service of the nation.
Welcoming Sankor Jyoti Baruah and leaders from organisations including AASU, AASA, ATSA, as well as Adivasi and Gorkha bodies, Saikia said the BJP today has a strong presence across 71 percent of India’s geographical area.
Highlighting the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Saikia said India has earned global respect and recognition. He also praised Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, stating that under his leadership Assam has emerged as a model of development and progress.
Saikia expressed confidence that the leaders who joined the party would work with dedication for the service of Mother Assam and Mother India, and contribute to strengthening the state’s development journey.
Speaking on the occasion, Sankor Jyoti Baruah said he joined the BJP to become a partner in Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s vision of development and to work with nationalist commitment for the welfare of the people and the nation.
Among those who joined the BJP were former Pragjyotish College Principal Manoj Kumar Mahanta, young singer Trin Sharma, youth leader Dipankar Oja, retired Assam Finance Department officer Hemanta Kumar Deuri, and several former office-bearers of AASU, AASA and ATSA from different districts. Leaders from social, cultural and professional backgrounds were also present.
The joining programme was conducted by BJP State General Secretary Anup Barman. Senior leaders including BJP Assam in-charge Harish Dwivedi, Organisational General Secretary Rabindra Raju, Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita, and Assam Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah attended the event.
