Guwahati: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma will attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2026 in Davos, Switzerland, scheduled from January 19 to 23. He will represent Assam at the global event and take part in the five-day conference.

Dr. Sarma will address global industrialists, economists, CEOs of multinational companies, and leaders from the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Trade Organization (WTO). With this participation, he will become the first Assamese leader to take part in the WEF.

At the WEF, Dr. Sarma will highlight Assam’s governance reforms, industrial growth plans, and technology-driven development. He will also promote the state’s investment opportunities and success stories to global investors.

It is noteworthy that the Central government has chosen Assam to represent India at the WEF, along with other leading states. In the past, mainly developed states represented India at this summit. This year, Assam has received this opportunity for the first time.

The WEF conference provides a platform for world leaders to share their views and attract global investors. After the successful conclusion of the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit, expectations are high that Dr. Sarma’s participation at the WEF will further boost investment and economic prospects in Assam.

During the conference, Dr. Sarma will present development initiatives focused on inclusive growth and the digital revolution. India’s rapid economic growth has gained global attention, and Assam, being one of the fastest-growing states, has earned national and international recognition.

Dr. Sarma will attend more than 17 meetings at the WEF and sign several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). He will take part in discussions on key themes such as:

  • Building a future-ready workforce for the next industrial era
  • Travel and tourism as a potential $10 trillion industry
  • Health and healthcare
  • Industrial growth and investment opportunities

He will also present Assam’s industrial progress, investment opportunities, and key success stories as part of India’s economic transformation.

Founded in 1971, the WEF is a non-profit organization and is considered one of the most influential business conferences globally. It aims to strengthen global economic growth through geopolitics, education, technology, financial policy, and investment. Along with India, nearly 50 countries will participate in the conference.

Assam’s participation is expected to open new investment pathways, initiate projects such as semiconductor initiatives, and create employment opportunities for the youth, benefiting the state on multiple fronts.
