Guwahati: In a warm and joyful gathering, senior citizens took part in a cookery contest at DeKAV restaurant on R.G. Baruah Road on Monday. The event aimed to promote healthy self-cooking, community bonding, better motor skills, and to help prevent social isolation among the elderly. Organisers also highlighted the value of choosing organic, home-grown ingredients, especially those cultivated in kitchen gardens.
The contest was hosted by Dr. Siddhartha Foundation, an NGO working for the welfare of senior citizens since 2018. The competition featured two categories—Silver Surfers and Mon Jai. Participants were aged between 60 and 85 years.

The Mon Jai category was dedicated to the ladies of Mother’s Old Age Home, who showcased their long-lost culinary skills with dishes like Mogumahor Bor, Begenа with raw peanuts, and many more. The event space was filled with healthy dishes such as dal and soybean cakes, healthy dahi wadas, cheese nimkis, idli with chutney, and other nutritious snacks.
Musfiqur Rahman won the first prize with his delicious dry fruit ladoo, while Saroo Talukdar from Mother’s Old Age Home secured the top spot in her category with her dish of dry fish, kosu and bilahi.
The contest was graced by several dignitaries, including Dr. Rathindra Bhuyan (Retired Director, DHS), Dr. A.K. Bhattacharyya (Senior Cardiologist), Chef Atul Lahkar, and Mrs. Jyoti Das.
The event formed an important part of a broader initiative promoting healthy ageing, focusing on good food habits, regular exercise, and mental well-being for senior citizens.
