Guwahati: The Department of Chemistry at B. Borooah College (Autonomous), Guwahati, will host a two-day international conference on sustainable science on November 2 and 3.
The International Conference on Progress and Challenges in Modern Day Sustainable Science (PCMDSS-2026) is being organised by the Department of Chemistry in association with the Pollution Control Board, Assam, and the Assam Science Technology and Environmental Council (ASTEC).
The conference will bring together scientists, researchers, academics, policymakers, industry experts and students to discuss emerging scientific approaches to sustainability and the challenges of converting research into practical solutions.
A major focus of PCMDSS-2026 will be on translating molecular-level research into sustainable technologies, processes and applications. Discussions will also cover the role of chemistry and allied disciplines in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, along with scientific challenges and emerging trends in sustainability research.
“Sustainability is no longer a concern that can be addressed by one discipline or institution alone. It requires meaningful collaboration among scientists, researchers, policymakers, industry and young scholars,” said Dr Bijoy S. Goswami, Head of the Department of Chemistry, B. Borooah College.
Dr Pradyumna Mazumdar, Convener of PCMDSS-2026, said the conference would focus on how advances in chemistry and related fields can move beyond laboratories and contribute to sustainable technologies, processes and practices. He also said the event would provide students and young researchers an opportunity to engage with current developments in sustainable science.
Several scientists and industry experts from India and abroad have confirmed their participation. Prof. Bill Jones of the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, UK, will deliver the international keynote address.
Other international speakers include Prof. Mihails Arhangelskis of the University of Warsaw, Poland, and Prof. Nadeesh M. Adassooriya of the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.
National speakers will include Prof. Tridib K. Sarma of IIT Indore, Prof. Sasanka Deka of Delhi University, Prof. Upasana Bora Sinha of Nagaland University, Dr Debajit Sarma of IIT Patna, Dr Binod Bihari Palei of CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar, Dr Dinabandhu Das of Jawaharlal Nehru University and Dr Bhaskar Jyoti Deka of IIT Roorkee.
Industry participation will include Dr Monoj Mon Kalita of Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany, and Dr Biva Talukdar, an EU sustainable technology consultant based in Germany.
The scientific sessions will cover areas including energy, health, organic and inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, green chemistry, environment and sustainability, biomaterials, agriculture and food technology, climate change, waste management and multidisciplinary science.
The programme will feature plenary and invited lectures, short invited lectures, student oral presentations and poster presentations.
The conference is being held as the postgraduate Department of Chemistry at B. Borooah College marks its 62nd anniversary. Established in 1964, the department currently offers undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes and has undertaken research projects supported by agencies including DST-SERB, UGC, ARIAS and RIDF.
