Guwahati: The Indian National Congress has formally ended its political alliance with Raijor Dal, bringing the partnership between the two parties to an immediate close.
The decision was taken on the direction of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi. An organisational circular, Ref. No. APCC/Circular/546, signed by APCC General Secretary (Organisation) Ramanna Baruah, was issued on Thursday.
According to the Congress, the alliance was formed ahead of the previous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections to bring together regional and Left parties and present a united opposition against the BJP and what the party described as communal forces.
However, the Congress said that relations with Raijor Dal had gradually weakened because of differences between the two parties. The party alleged that Raijor Dal leaders had repeatedly made critical and derogatory remarks against Congress leaders and leaders of other alliance partners.
The Congress said such developments had affected the functioning and understanding within the alliance and made it difficult to continue the political arrangement.
The end of the alliance marks a change in the opposition political landscape in Assam. The Congress and Raijor Dal had earlier been part of a broader effort to bring different opposition groups together during elections.
