Guwahati: On the occasion of World Immunization Week, Peerless Hospital Guwahati highlighted the need to treat vaccination as a lifelong priority, not just something for children.

The hospital said vaccines play a key role in keeping people healthy at all ages and help build stronger communities. World Immunization Week is observed every year to spread awareness about the importance of vaccines and to encourage people to keep their vaccination records updated. Experts note that vaccines have saved more than 150 million lives globally over the past 50 years.

Doctors pointed out that in India, many people still believe vaccines are only needed during childhood. However, the 2026 theme—“For Every Generation, Vaccines Work”—reminds people that immunization is important throughout life.

Dr. Asif Iqbal Hussain, Senior Consultant at Peerless Hospital, said adult vaccination is strongly recommended by the Government of India, the World Health Organization, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He explained that vaccines help prevent serious diseases, reduce health risks, and lower death rates.

He added that adults should take important vaccines such as flu, tetanus, hepatitis, HPV, pneumococcal, MMR, COVID-19, and typhoid. Many of these require booster doses over time. People with health issues, frequent travel, or high-stress jobs need these vaccines even more.

Doctors also said vaccination not only protects individuals but also helps protect family members, especially the elderly and children. Vaccines can prevent serious conditions like liver disease, certain cancers, and heart or lung problems.

Addressing vaccine hesitancy, Dr. Hussain said fear and misinformation are still major challenges, especially in rural areas. Many people believe false claims that vaccines cause infertility or other health issues. He stressed that vaccines are safe and effective, and they also help build herd immunity, which protects the wider community.

Dr. Gautam Kr. Das, CEO of Peerless Hospital Guwahati, said healthcare should focus more on prevention rather than just treatment. He said hospitals must create awareness and encourage people to take preventive steps like regular vaccination.

Vaccines are available at both government and private healthcare centres, and timely immunization can prevent serious illness and reduce medical costs. The hospital said promoting adult vaccination is important for a healthier future.
