Guwahati: The Election Commission of India has announced that the Silent Period for the ongoing Assam Legislative Assembly Election 2026 will begin from 5:00 PM on April 7. The restriction will remain in force for 48 hours before the end of polling, as per Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

During this period, all forms of election campaigning will be completely banned in all Assembly constituencies of Assam.

The Election Commission said that public meetings, rallies, processions and any other campaign activities will not be allowed during the Silent Period. Political parties and candidates will also not be allowed to promote campaign content through television, electronic media or social media platforms.

The Commission has also banned canvassing for votes through phone calls, bulk SMS or social media messages during this time. Any attempt to influence voters will be treated as a violation of election rules.

The Election Commission has further directed that political leaders and party workers brought from outside a constituency must leave the area after the campaign period ends, if they are not voters of that constituency. The district administration and police have been asked to ensure strict compliance with this order.

The Commission also clarified that displaying election-related content, including opinion polls or survey results, on television, cinema or similar electronic platforms will be prohibited during the 48 hours before the end of polling.

Chief Electoral Officer of Assam Anurag Goel has urged all candidates, political parties and media organisations to follow the rules strictly during the Silent Period. He also asked political parties to guide their workers and supporters to ensure full compliance.

The Election Commission warned that any violation of these rules will lead to legal action under the relevant provisions of the law.
