International Women’s Day Celebrated at RMC Guwahati

Guwahati: International Women’s Day 2026 was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Regional Meteorological Centre Guwahati, highlighting the theme “Give to Gain.” The day-long celebration included outreach activities, lectures and a plantation drive.

The programme began with a Meteorological Outreach Programme at Parijat Academy, located at Pamohi in Guwahati. The academy is a non-profit institution that provides holistic education to underprivileged children.

The outreach programme was led by Dr. Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Head of the Regional Meteorological Centre. During the event, meteorological instruments were demonstrated and students were briefed about various weather services provided by the India Meteorological Department.

Scientists including Sunit Das (Scientist-F), C. Amarnath (Scientist-D) and Sailen Saikia (Scientific Officer) demonstrated how meteorological instruments work and explained different weather monitoring services. The initiative helped students gain a better scientific understanding of meteorology. As part of the programme, books, stationery and sports goods were also donated to support the academy’s sustainability efforts.

Later, a special lecture was organised at the Regional Meteorological Centre to mark the occasion. The guest speaker, Dr. Jyoti Rani Borah, retired Associate Professor of B. Borooah College, delivered a talk on “Give to Gain: Importance of Collaboration for Uplifting Women.”

The celebration concluded with a plantation drive, symbolising environmental awareness and collective responsibility.

Several women officials of the centre played active roles in organising the programme. They included Dr. Gayatry Kalita (Scientist-D), Reeta Brahma Gayary (Meteorologist), Doli Haloi (Meteorologist), Sandipa Bhattacharya (Administrative Officer), Chinmoyee Gogoi (Meteorologist), Sayani Hossain (Meteorologist), Neelam Kumari (Meteorologist), Anamika Sarma (Scientific Assistant), Neha Tomar (Scientific Assistant), Pranita Koch (LDC), Purnima Ramchiary (LDC) and Rumi Baruah (MTS).

The programme was conducted by Raja Shaw, Junior Translation Officer, while Dr. Gayatry Kalita delivered the vote of thanks, bringing the celebration to a successful conclusion.
