Guwahati: A 12-Lecture Series on Trade and Commerce in Assam was inaugurated on Friday at the MCB Seminar Hall of Cotton University. The initiative is a joint effort by the Indian Accounting Association (Guwahati Branch), the Department of Commerce of Gauhati University, Gauhati Commerce College and the Department of Commerce of Cotton University.
The programme began with the National Anthem followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the Vice Chancellor of Cotton University, Ramesh Chandra Deka, along with Registrar (i/c) Hiren Deka and other distinguished guests. The cultural segment featured a graceful Satriya dance performance by Upasana Bishaya from Gauhati Commerce College.
The dignitaries present on the dais included Prof. Ramesh Chandra Deka, Dr. Hiren Deka, Prashanta Sharma, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management at Gauhati University, Sujit Sikidar, President of the Indian Accounting Association, Guwahati Branch, Naba Kumar Goswami, Head and Coordinator of the Department of Commerce at Handique Girls’ College, and Gargi Sarma of Rabindranath Tagore University, Hojai.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Sujit Sikidar explained the objectives of the lecture series and highlighted the role of the Indian Accounting Association, Guwahati Branch in promoting academic discussions and research in accounting, trade and commerce.
In his address, Vice Chancellor Prof. Ramesh Chandra Deka emphasized the importance of such academic initiatives in developing a deeper understanding of Assam’s trade environment and encouraging research-based discussions among students and scholars. Registrar (i/c) Dr. Hiren Deka also stressed the relevance of collaborative academic platforms in strengthening higher education and research.
The lecture series was formally inaugurated by Prof. Prashanta Sharma, who highlighted the importance of examining Assam’s trade and commerce from historical, economic and policy perspectives.
The first lecture of the series was delivered by Dr. Gargi Sarma, Assistant Professor and Head (i/c) of the Department of Commerce at Rabindranath Tagore University, Hojai. She spoke about contemporary issues and future prospects of trade and commerce in Assam.
The programme was anchored by Flying Officer Dr. Panchanan Barman, Branch Secretary of the Indian Accounting Association, Guwahati Branch. Students and faculty members from Gauhati Commerce College, Handique Girls’ College and Cotton University participated in the programme.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Archita Medhi, a postgraduate student of the Department of Commerce at Cotton University. The event concluded with the rendition of the state song “O Mur Apunar Desh”.
According to the organisers, the second lecture of the series will be held in April at Cotton University and will focus on the theme of Commerce Education in Assam.
