The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police, probing the death of singer Zubeen Garg, has invited several prominent personalities from civil society for a meeting on Tuesday, October 14, to share updates on the investigation, including details of the autopsy report.
However, most of the invited members have declined the invitation, stating that the law should take its own course.
Senior journalist Rajdeep Bailung Baruah said, “I am neither a legal advisor nor a health expert. I will not go. We have faith in the law. Let the law take its own course.”
Noted litterateur Phanindra Dev Choudhury also refused to attend, saying, “If I ever feel it is necessary to help in the interest of justice for Zubeen, I will do it on my own. My concern is only for justice, without any politics.”
Three representatives from the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) — Chief Advisor Dr. Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya, President Utpal Sarma, and General Secretary Samiran Phukon — were also invited but have declined to participate. In a statement, AASU said the SIT should conduct a strict and impartial inquiry into the case.
Zubeen’s close associate Rahul Gautam Sarma urged the authorities to ensure fairness, saying, “Give justice to Zubeen Garg. The investigating agency should submit a perfect report in court. We should not make unnecessary comments.”
Those invited to the meeting include Manoj Kumar Goswami, Anuradha Sharma Pujari, Dr. Hitesh Baruah, Sanjeev Phukan, Ramanuj Dutta Choudhury, Shyamantaka Gautam, Zarir Hussain, and others.
According to official sources, the meeting is scheduled at 4 p.m. and will focus on the findings and the next steps in the ongoing investigation.
Speaking to the media, Special DGP (CID) and SIT head Munna Prasad Gupta clarified that the post-mortem report will not be made public, saying, “It is not a public document. We will submit it before the court. The invited guests will only be briefed on what we are sharing now.”
