Session on Pain Management in Cancer Care Held at Apna Ghar, Guwahati

Guwahati: A session on “Pain Management in Cancer Care” was organized at Apna Ghar Guwahati (Intas Foundation) on January 9, 2025. The session was conducted by Dr. Nivedita Upamanyu, a specialist in the Pain and Palliative Care Department at State Cancer Institute, GMCH.

The session focused on addressing the challenges cancer patients face in managing pain during treatment and offered guidance on effective pain relief methods. Dr. Upamanyu provided an overview of cancer, its treatment procedures, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and essential precautions during these treatments.

Highlighting the different types of pain experienced by cancer patients, she explained how pain levels vary based on the stage of cancer, treatment type, and individual responses. Both physical and psychological pain were discussed, with an emphasis on their impact on patients’ quality of life.

The session also introduced various pain management strategies. These included pharmacological approaches as well as non-pharmacological techniques such as physical therapy, acupuncture, yoga, relaxation exercises, and mindfulness activities, offering a holistic approach to pain relief.
