Guwahati: Assam’s eminent flutist and music director Dipak Sarma passed away on Monday morning at 6:15 AM, marking the end of a remarkable musical journey that spanned decades. He was undergoing treatment in Guwahati before being shifted to Rela Hospital, Chennai, where he had been on ventilator support for the past few days.
Known for his soulful flute renditions and timeless compositions, Dipak Sarma carved a special place in the hearts of music lovers across Assam and beyond. He composed music for several acclaimed Assamese films, including Jonky Panoi and Jatinga Ityadi, and was recently working on Luitak Vetibo Kune.
His musical albums — Story of Love (Raaga and Rocks International) and Beyond the Horizon — reflected his exceptional ability to blend Indian classical music with modern sensibilities.
Sarma also made significant contributions to national television, composing for popular serials such as Karm and Wazir on Zee TV, and performing in instrumental jugalbandis for Kaleidoscope on Star Plus.
Throughout his illustrious career, he received numerous accolades, including the NETV Best Musician Award (2006), Sangeet Prabha Award (2007), and the Azim Hazarika Award by the Sivasagar Press Club.
Dipak Sarma’s passing is a great loss to Assam’s cultural and musical fraternity, leaving behind a lasting legacy of melody, devotion, and artistic brilliance that will continue to inspire generations.
