Eight Arrested After Youth Beaten to Death During Puja Celebration in Guwahati

Guwahati: A 28-year-old man, identified as Abhinash Rajak, was allegedly beaten to death by a group of youths during Dashami celebrations near the Kalibari Jagriti Sangha Durga Puja pandal in Bamunimaidam on Thursday night.

According media reports, the incident occurred after Abhinash reportedly requested the organisers to play a song by the late singer Zubeen Garg, which led to an argument and a violent attack.

Following a complaint filed by the victim’s sister, Sarita Rajak, on Friday, the Chandmari Police launched an investigation and arrested eight personsRaju Dutta, Gopal Das, Basant Basfor, Bishal Chakraborty, Biju Sil, Ramen Dakua, Subhendra Sekhar Roy, and Baran Chakraborty.

They allegedly encouraged others to assault the victim and later tried to destroy evidence.

Investigators also stated that the accused were under the influence of alcohol during the incident. Abhinash, who had set up a small temporary shop near the pandal, was attacked while returning home.

A lynching case has been registered, and around 10 more people, including the main accused, are still absconding.
