Dispur Police Crack Down on Bag-Snatching Ring, Apprehend Five Suspects

Guwahati: Guwahati Police have apprehended five individuals believed to be involved in a series of bag-snatching incidents across Guwahati.

The arrests followed a thorough investigation into a recent bag-snatching incident reported in the Survey area under the jurisdiction of Dispur Police Station.

On April 23rd, 2024, authorities received reports of the incident, prompting swift action by Dispur Police, who initiated Case No. 352/2024 under sections 356/379/323 of the Indian Penal Code.

Led by two teams from the East Police District, the investigation led to coordinated raids in Tamulpur and Guwahati.

On Saturday, the efforts culminated in the arrest of five suspects allegedly connected to the offenses. The arrested individuals are identified as Rupam Ali (18) of Morigaon, Rahul Sutradhar (21) of Barpeta, Dipak Barman (18), Nisha Barman (38), and Rahul Das (32) of PS-Tamulpur.

Police statements indicate that Rupam Ali, Dipak Barman, and Rahul Sutradhar were the primary perpetrators, targeting mobile phones and handbags. Stolen items were allegedly sold to Rahul Das, who operates a shop in Tamulpur, with Nisha Barman facilitating the delivery of stolen goods.

During the operation, significant recoveries were made, including two scooters—one reported stolen from Bharalumukh and the other from Geetanagar PS area. Additionally, a total of 49 mobile phones were recovered.

The arrests signify a major breakthrough in curbing bag-snatching incidents in the area, highlighting the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies. The accused are currently in police custody awaiting further legal proceedings.
