Guwahati: The Assam BJP has alleged that some political groups are trying to mislead the investigation into the death of singer Zubeen Garg by spreading false information and creating unrest through social media.
In a press statement issued from the party headquarters at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, BJP spokesperson Brojen Mahanta said that people linked to the Congress and Left parties are using the “Justice for Zubeen Garg” movement to attack the government.
Mahanta said one of the accused in the case has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to transfer the investigation outside Assam, while opposition parties are also demanding that the case be handed over to the CBI.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed concern over such efforts, saying they undermine the credibility of the Assam Police.
The BJP welcomed the state government’s decision to form a Judicial Commission headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court to look into the case. The party urged people sharing content related to Garg’s death on social media to submit their information before the commission through an affidavit.
The statement said the government is fully committed to ensuring justice for Zubeen Garg and will take strict action against anyone trying to use the incident to create unrest in the state. The BJP also reaffirmed its commitment to protect the identity and unity of Assam.
