ATASU Protest for ST Status: Leaders Detained During Dispur Demonstration

Guwahati: Members of the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) staged a protest near the Assam Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Tai Ahom community. The demonstration was part of the union’s long-standing agitation for constitutional recognition.

Protesters attempted to march towards the Assembly in a symbolic move to “Gherao” it, but were stopped by security personnel. The Assam Police detained several protestors, including ATASU President Milan Burhagohain and General Secretary Bhaskar Jyoti Borgohain.

“Today, there is a protest program to encircle the Assembly demanding ST status for the Ahom community. The Assam Police have detained many of us, including our president and general secretary,” said one of the demonstrators.

“We demand the unconditional release of our leaders. Otherwise, there will be protests across Upper Assam.” another a protester said.

The Tai Ahom community has been consistently demanding ST status. Over the years, ATASU and allied organisations have repeatedly organised demonstrations, sit-ins to push their demand.

Despite several rounds of talks and committee reports, the demand remains unresolved.
