Guwahati: Romen Chandra Borthakur, a senior politician, has expressed shock and concern over the recent online stock trading scam in Assam, estimated to be worth more than thousand crore. He questioned how the state administration and authority remained unaware of transactions involving thousands of crores, while common people face scrutiny for transactions as small as ₹10-20 lakh.
Borthakur’s comments came after the Assam police detained actor-choreographer Sumi Borah and her husband Tarkik Bora on September 12, 2024, for their alleged involvement in the scam.
The scam, operational for nearly three years, was busted earlier in September with the arrest of Bishal Phukan, the alleged mastermind who defrauded over 1,500 people.
Assam’s Director General of Police, Gyanendra Pratap Singh, praised the Special Task Force (STF) for their efforts, saying “The game is up for them.”
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warned citizens against falling prey to fraudsters, emphasizing that authorized agencies handle stockbroking through demat accounts.
