Guwahati: The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has urged Gauhati University Vice Chancellor Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta to resign from his post amid allegations of corruption.
In a letter submitted on Wednesday, the organisation accused the Vice Chancellor of failing to handle the allegations with transparency.
“You have neither disproved the allegations nor initiated any impartial inquiry. No credible evidence has been presented to allay public concerns. Instead, your threat of legal action against those questioning you appears intended to silence criticism,” the AJYCP stated in its letter.
The student body called on Dr. Mahanta to step down voluntarily until a fair and independent investigation is conducted, stating that such an action would help uphold the university’s integrity and restore public trust.
Notably, Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta is the elder brother of Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the Zubeen Garg death case.
